Brief Journey of Assembly of Asia-Pacific IAP (AAPIAP)
The combined meeting of IAP-Divisions in the Asia-Pacific Region was created from the dedicated efforts of the senior pathologists of Australia and Japan. The first Asia-Pacific IAP meeting was held in Sydney in 1995 with major participation of pathologists from Australia, Japan, Hong Kong, and Korea. Subsequently, the 2nd APIAP meeting was held in Korea in 1999, followed by the 3rd meeting in Bangkok in 2003. Since then, it has become a tradition for APIAP meeting to be held biennially (once every two years), alternating with the World IAP-Congress, which also takes biennially.
After several meetings, the idea emerged to form a sub-organization under the IAP, leading to the establishment of the Assembly of Asia-Pacific IAP (AAPIAP), with members from IAP Divisions in the Asia-Pacific regions which spans from Pakistan to Australia and is the home of some most populous countries of the world (Fig 1, Asia Pacific region map).

The structure of AAPIAP includes a Council working under the frame-work of its formulated by-laws, with the first Council led by Prof. Robert Osamura as Convenor and Gary Tse as Secretary/Treasurer. The Assembly of Asia-Pacific Regions became the first Assembly of the IAP, followed by the establishment of Assemblies in other regions like European Assembly, Latin American Assembly and African Assembly.
In addition to regularly organizing APIAP meetings, there was an effort by the Assembly to provide academic activities to support member countries. This has resulted in consistent educational activities, such as pathology update workshops in Cambodia and the Philippines.
The history of the AAPIAP meetings is as follows
The list of Convenors and Secretaries/Treasurers of AAPIAP over the years is as follows:
