Sarah and Henry meet monthly to review our financial statements and to assure that payments for bursaries, dues and journal subscriptions are all up to date. We also prepare budgets which are typically approved at our IAP executive meetings held in conjunction with the biannual meeting and/or at our annual meeting held in conjunction with the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology.

Significant effort by the Treasurer team is also spent preparing documents for the United States Internal Revenue Service. As the IAP was incorporated in the United States, the Treasurer must be a U.S. citizen. The IAP was incorporated as a non-profit organization, which means in part, that we do not pay taxes on any income including profits generated from our biannual meetings. However, the IAP must still submit tax documents to the Internal Revenue Service on a yearly basis. We work with an outside accounting firm to submit these forms. Our accounting firm also does an annual review and/or audit of our financial records to make sure that there are no financial irregularities.

The IAP collects dues from each of its divisions based on the number of members. In addition, some members may choose to access the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology supported journals (Modern Pathology and Laboratory Investigations). The Assistant Treasurer prepared the invoices for dues memberships and transfers money to the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology for the journal subscriptions.

The IAP maintains an investments account as well as an ordinary bank account for routine transactions. Decisions about how funds are invested are made by the Finance Committee in conjunction with the Executive Team. Their decisions have assured that the IAP has the funds needed to continue its mission and to serve its worldwide membership.

Thanks to the hard work of Sarah and Stan, our process for tracking dues and other payments have been greatly enhanced. Stan has also been making sure we are a cyber secure organization. We are particularly pleased that we are now able to accept dues payment using a credit card or through PayPal, which we hope will make it easier for many of the divisions to pay their dues! Thank you, Stan and Sarah!
