Last August 24th and 25th, 2018 the International Course of Soft Tissue and Bone Pathology was held at Hospital Angeles in Puebla, Mexico, in memoriam of the distinguished Latin American pathologist, Dr. Eduardo Santini-Araujo, who passed away in 2017.

Argentinian by birth, Dr. Eduardo Santini-Araujo was IAP president from 2014 to 2016 (the second Latin American IAP president after Adonis R. L. de Carvalho president 1986-1988), and was also awarded the IAP Gold Medal.

The course was organized by Dr. Sergio Sanchez-Sosa, IAP vice-president for Latin America, with the special attendance of Dr. George Kontogeorgos, present IAP president and Dr. Vilma Barahona-Matamoros, present IAP Mexican Division president.

This tribute to Dr. Eduardo Santini-Araujo developed in two parts. The first was the Soft Tissue and Bone Pathology Course with a series of lectures on the topics on which Dr. Santini-Araujo was a recognized international expert. The Faculty included (in alphabetical order): Dr. Alberto Ayala, Dr. Jorge Albores-Saavedra, Dr. Antonio Llombart-Bosch, Dr. Ricardo Kalil, Dr. Yong Koo Park, Dr. Hugo Dominguez-Malagon, Dr. Antonio Nascimento, Dr. Blas Dios, Dr. Celso Lopes de Mello and Dr. Isabel Werneck. The plenary lecture “Ewing Sarcoma: 100 years of history” was a masterly presentation by Dr. Llombart-Bosch.

In the second part, his colleagues, friends and relatives presented some of the most important aspects of Dr. Santini-Araujo’s life, not only as a great pathologist , but also as a faithful friend and loving husband and father. A special remembrance was presented by Dr. Francisco Nogales.

A very important initiative of Dr. Santini-Araujo and  Dr. Florabel Mullick was the creation of the Latin American Assembly of the IAP. This Assembly has strengthened the participation of Latin American pathologists inside the IAP. Some pathologists from Argentina, Mexico, Spain and other countries from Latin America helped Dr. Santini-Araujo to make this project a successful reality. His last achievement in this effort was the incorporation of the Anatomic Pathology Mexican Republic Federation as the Mexican Division of the IAP.

Dr. Santini-Araujo was a close friend of a lot of people around the world, a superb International Bone Pathology expert and a very outstanding leader for Latin American pathologists. 

As an admirer of Ralph Waldo Emerson, Dr. Eduardo Santini-Araujo was a very refined example of a representative man, an example of all the splendid possibilities every man keeps inside.
